Overweight and obesity are linked to a number of negative health consequences: the risk of heart disease, osteoarthritis and diabetes are much greater in those who are obese than in normal-weight people. While weight loss and healthy weight maintenance may be achieved by alterations in lifestyle, such long-term changes can be difficult for many.

The number of overweight people in the U.S. is increasing at an alarming rate. Today, approximately one in three adults and one in four children are overweight. This dramatic increase in the number of overweight Americans is puzzling. As a nation, we consume less fat and fewer calories than 10 or 20 years ago.
